Paris-based creative Adrien Marc has been making music in numerous guises for well over a decade now - carefully distilling years of formal jazz training, family jam sessions and travels abroad to become Sable Blanc. Everything he creates has the stamp of an avid samplist, with Wu-worthy keys, K15-style bass grooves and Loz Goddard’s assiduously funky beats all reframed by Marc’s adroit musicality and meticulous approach.

Formative years as a drummer and time spent in Seoul with Glen Check’s The Basement Résistance collective have afforded Marc the space to fuse his wide-ranging influences. From Laurence Guy and Kaidi Tatham to the simple pleasure of a beer at sunset and the clean lines of modern art, Sable Blanc is an ongoing curation of moments in time. However, be under no illusion: Marc may refer to his output as “afternoon music”, but its seamless tessellations and slicing beats make Sable Blanc a rare find.

1. Present Perfect Balance is the name of the game on title track and EP opener, present perfect. Piano arps dance like dappled sunlight across the arrangement, a hypnotic distraction from the foreboding synths building tension below. Elsewhere, soft octaves are lovingly bestowed on the listener, ushering the cobwebs off a deliciously dusty beat. Worlds collide yet equilibrium is maintained as hard-hitting house meets romance from summers gone by.

2. Outta Town Ballad Outta town and outta this world - a disarming subtlety drives outta town ballad from the speakers and straight to your heart. Simplicity is king here, with a track born out of sedimented piano motifs, a rolling beat and the hi-hats’ metronomic tick. Although not a ballad in the traditional sense, the long-form development of this track can’t help but inspire a meditative introspection: you’re alone in the crowd, now get grooving.

3. Chabada It’s a brave producer that puts sax at the front of a track, yet Chabada manages it with a shrug and a wry smile. Its fragmented hook is teasingly drawn out as if to say, ‘leave it with me - I’ve got this.’ Remember that to the brave go the spoils, and Present Perfect’s closing number is one you can already hear pumping across the bar as day turns to night. It’s the hook you’ll be humming long after the sun has gone down.

4. Present Perfect [Nymad Remix] In true Ad Hoc fashion, we’ve enlisted one of Manchester’s finest emerging talents to reimagine title track present perfect. A sublime example of his featherlight touch, Nymad’s mix is the zen-like yin to Sable Blanc’s buoyant yang. Ticking and teasing - yet never tentative - this sharp reworking aligns perfectly with the rest of Blanc’s EP, resulting in fluent folktronica worthy of Four Tet and Bonobo.
