about

Brought up in Nottingham to Pakistani parents, Manchester-based Raheel Khan (aka Taurtuollo) incorporates the past and present, live and recorded into eclectic sounding grooves, live and sampled: sound bites, sitars and synthesizers.

This EP cracks off with the outstanding Om’s Mehndi: a hazy, infectious groove which draws rhythmic influences from all over the world, whether it’s the increasingly dub delayed piano chords from the West Indies, the lazy shakers and woody, African percussion; or the Western pensive guitar and bass lick. The track then breaks down with a more Detroit sounding, slow chord progression, only to build up to an increasingly universal sounding composition that will be sure to delight ears and dancefloors, helping you find a music induced zen state.

Next up is Palm, a downtempo, glitchy beat that arrives out of the ambient bussle of the streets. One to bop your head to, the percussion here is equally diverse. Constantly changing, continually re-arranging, you’ll likely hear something new every time you listen to this simmering tune.

Last but by no means least: Kingsdown Lounge emerges once again from the chitter chatter of this musical meeting place. This dusty number features yet more elegant guitar lines and chord progressions. A laid back feel, but one you can dance to. Crisp hits, gleaning synths and threats of vocal lines & speech swing in and out of focus. Once again, this one makes you want to re-listen and re-absorb the wide variety of this complex number.

Thank yous:
(Raheel) Thank you to Aamir and Chris for shaping the sound, and to George, Sean, Anna and Will for letting me record you play.

(Dave) Raheel was someone I met by chance, but it was one of those chance encounters I was so happy that happened, because I’ve loved his productions since the moment I first heard them. I persistently asked him to release music he had already produced, but he insisted I wait until he had made something original for the label. I’m glad I waited, because I think this EP is something special.
Special thanks to: Chris Knight, Rhys and David from MCR Live, Chris Massey, and George from Shindigger.
